Cologne Cathedral - the landmark of Cologne in the heart of Cologne. 157 metres tall, it is the third largest church building in the world. Construction began in 1248, but the Cologne Cathedral was not completed until 1880, 600 years later. 533 steps lead visitors up to the south tower of Cologne Cathedral. From the Rhine Boulevard, also called the Rhine Steps, you can enjoy a wonderful view of Cologne Cathedral and the Hohenzollern Bridge. Sunsets can be perfectly observed here. Between Christophstr./Mediapark and Rudolfplatz there are some nice cafes, restaurants and bars. The Poller Wiesen, in the south of Cologne on the right bank of the Rhine, are a beautiful place to enjoy some greenery not far from the city centre. In summer, you can watch wonderful sunsets here. For a backup nearby, you can grab something tasty at Café Saint Louis.

The modern Rheinauhafen is home to the Kranhäuser, crane-shaped office and residential buildings, right on the banks of the Rhine. The Sports and Olympic Museum is also located here. A little further down the Rhine is the Chocolate Museum. A local restaurant recommendation is The Hub by Kapten & Son.

The Volksgarten is located in the south of Cologne. The Volksgarten is extensive and 14 hectares in size. You can go pedal boating on the lake in the Volksgarten. There is also a beer garden here. In addition, there is the beautiful Daur Lang restaurant nearby, from which you can take Asian delicacies into the park.

The Eigelsteintorburg is located on the edge of the Eigelstein quarter, just off Ebertplatz. It is one of the four surviving city gate castles of the medieval city wall. Many restaurants and cafés are located here. Carnival, also known as the fifth season in Cologne, is one of the highlights of Cologne. But did you know that 400 tons of garbage are produced during this time? Not a good balance - that has to change!

The Cologne Christmas markets are one of the annual highlights in Cologne. Here, too, sustainability awareness is growing.

For example, the Christmas market at Cologne Cathedral uses only LED lights, which are particularly energy-saving. Back in 2010, they were the first market whose food and drink offerings were mostly certified organic - the highlight here being the vegan organic mulled wine. In addition, you can also find a completely sustainable Christmas market at the Faculty of Humanities. It is organized by the newly founded university group for sustainability.
